We’re starting our run-up with a toast: May 2020 be better than 2019.

It’s still a bit early for that here. it’s not even 8am here in the U.K.
But may all your endeavours in the new year be rewarding and your year filled with cries of laughter and tears of happiness.

Thank you and the same to you and yours.
It’s never too early for champagne. I (chose to) believe that’s a quote from the Queen herself - and if not, from her mother.

Oh I quite agree.
Especially when you’ve a large plate of light and airy macrons.

Funnily enough we just finished the meal off with some Macaroons. Co conut and chocolate flavor. And a Stilton, some Duchy Originals, and a glass or three of a nicely aged desert wine. Might as well end the year with some indulgence...

Bloody spell check changed macarons to macrons.
Funny thing about my colleagues. We’ve been selling macarons for about four years at the store I work at. Every time I offer a macaron to a colleague, they say, ‘no thank you, I don’t like coconut’.
Then I have to inform them of the difference between a macaron and a macaroon.
You’ve got to treat yourself from time to time.
Ye’, I love a nice macaroon drizzled with chocolate and glazed cherry on top.

While the date has changed, over the millennia , the date of New Years has been anything but arbitrary.

What’s not arbitrary about it? As you say, it’s changed over the years, plus different cultures celebrate the new year on different days, and it doesn’t reflect any natural or religious phenomenon, since it misses solstice and the birth of Christ. The Julian authorities presumably went to some effort to pick when in the solar cycle they’d align it to, so it’s not arbitrary in that sense, but it has no special significance beyond that, that I’m aware of.

Arbitrary means picked at random. The date Europeans and middle eastern inspired Europeans have celebrated New Year’s Day has always held religious or cultural significance.
The religious significance in relation to the Gregorian calendar is that it marks the beginning of the feast dedicated to the naming and circumcision of Jesus.
